Why I am running for reelection to the Gavilan Board
My commitment to education is both professional and deeply personal. As a community college instructor, educator, school psychologist, educational administrator, and community college board trustee I have spent my career in service of student success. That experience shapes every decision I bring to the board.
It is also personal: my father used his education to change careers and support our family, my brother transferred to a four-year university and became an educator, and my sister earned her AA and became a nurse. I have watched countless students graduate with certificates, transfer degrees, and AA degrees, and heard their stories of transformation. That is why I do this work.
Listening to Our Community, Delivering Results
As your trustee, I've listened to students, faculty, staff, and community members. Together, we have developed improved courses and clearer academic pathways, expanded dual enrollment opportunities for high school students to take college courses at their campuses, provided four semesters of free tuition for every student regardless of need, paused parking fees, and expanded access to food, transportation, counseling, and health services. We've also advanced a student housing plan and are now pursuing state and private funding to make it a reality. These initiatives have increased student enrollment, student retention, and graduation rates.
Investing in Our Campus
I've championed stronger campus security, upgraded technology and data infrastructure, and long-overdue repairs to our roads and buildings, sidewalks, and HVAC systems. I'm proud of the facilities we've delivered, including the award-winning Hollister Education Center and our new Library and Student Resource Center, opening this November at our Gilroy campus. I look forward to the completion of our new Child Development Center and the STEM Department building on the horizon— all part of a forward-looking facilities master plan we approved shaping Gavilan's future.
Leading with Collaboration
Working alongside our campus labor and student organizations, we achieved two consecutive two-year collective bargaining agreements with faculty. We initiated the process for student workers to unionize and pursue their own agreement. We raised wages for faculty, staff, and students while maintaining a strong financial reserve — proof that fiscal responsibility and investing in our people go hand in hand. I remain committed to collaborative leadership, equity and access, strong community partnerships, and accountability in how we use our resources.
